The Lakewood BlueClaws’ Jose Pujols and Josh Tobias have been named South Atlantic League mid-season all-stars, league president Eric Krupa announced Tuesday. They will play on the Northern Division team, which will oppose the Southern Division in the 57th annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game on June 21, at the Whitaker Bank Ballpark, home of the Lexington (Ky.) Legends, a Kansas City Royals affiliate.
Pujols will be the starting right fielder while Tobias will be a reserve second baseman. They are the 54th and 55th players to represent Lakewood in the game. The BlueClaws began play in 2001.
Pujols, a 20-year-old from Santo Domingo Este in the Dominican Republic, led the league in homers (10)
and was tied for fifth in runs batted in (34) through Monday
night. He has already more than doubled the four home runs he hit last year with the Williamsport (Pa.) Crosscutters in the New York-Penn League, a short-season Class A circuit.
Pujols, who signed with the Phillies in 2012 as an amateur free agent, is the 24th-ranked prospect in their system per MLB Pipeline. Pujols has slugged 25 homers as a professional.
Tobias, 23, who hails from Greensboro, N.C., batted .286 with five homers, 32 runs batted in and four steals for the Phillies’ low Class A affiliate through Monday night. He was the Phillies’ Minor League Hitter of the Month for April after batting .347. He has 14 multi-hit games this season, including a four-hit game in the home opener at FirstEnergy Park on April 14. He was Philadelphia’s 10th-round selection last year out of the University of Florida.
Krupa announced the rosters Tuesday. The first half of the season will conclude June 19.
