Trading For Anthony Davis Would Be A Disaster For The Knicks
Rumors has it that the New York Knicks are toying with the idea of trading for Anthony Davis.
If the New York Knicks were to make a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans for Anthony Davis, it would be a disaster. The Knicks have a horrible history when it comes to making trades and this would be no different. Time and time again we have seen the Knicks mortgage their future by trading away multiple draft picks to acquire a big name. This is a trend that needs to end.
Apparently, a package to acquire Davis would be centered around Kristaps Porzingis, Kevin Knox, Frank Ntilikina and future first round picks. While there is no guarantee that Porzingis will come back healthy, Knox or Ntilikina become All-Stars or that their future first round picks become impact players, there is also no guarantee Anthony Davis would even resign with the Knicks once he becomes an unrestricted free agent. The only thing that the Knicks would be guaranteeing is that they will continue to be horrible as they would be acquiring a losing player.
Many have said that Davis is a top three player in the National Basketball Association and that couldn’t be further from the truth. How can you possibly say someone is a top player in the league when he has barely made the playoffs? As of 1/29/2019, the New Orleans Pelicans record with Anthony Davis on their roster since the 2012-13 season is 261-347. An elite player is supposed to take his team to the playoffs every year and with Davis, that just doesn’t happen.
The Knicks would be better off getting a top three pick in the 2019 NBA Draft and hoping that Porzingis comes back healthy and that Knox and Ntilikina can continue to develop. The key thing for the Knicks going forward has to be attracting a big time free agent to sign with the team. If the team trades for Davis, then they will have less money to offer in free agency this offseason and that will lead to more of what we have been seeing over the past few years, lots of losing.
