Staten Island Suffers First Loss of Season
The Staten Island Yankees suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday Night against West Virginia. West Virginia has now improved to 6-0, while the Yankees are 5-1.
The Yankees were only down 5-4 going into the top of the 9th inning, however West Virginia would score two key insurance runs off Michael Schaub to increase their lead to 7-4.
West Virginia got on board first, in the top of the 2nd after a triple by Jordan George and a sacrifice fly by Hunter Owen. The Staten Island Yankees would tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd on a double by Jose Rosario that would bring home Ricardo Ferreira from first. West Virginia would take back the lead in the 4th and keep that lead for the rest of the game. They scored 2 runs in the 5th to make it a 4-1 ball game. In the bottom of the 6th, with the Yankees trailing 5-1, they would make things interesting after scoring 3 runs. That inning was started by a Ferreira single, Jose Rosario double, and singles by Kane Sweeney and Dom Thompson-Williams.
However, that would be all the runs the Yankees would be able to get to the plate for the remainder of the game as they fell 7-4.
The Yankees hit the ball well as they had 11 hits on the night. Ferreira, Rosario, Sweeney, and Bridges all contributed two hits a piece. Sweeney has been on a tear this season batting an incredible .364. For West Virginia, first basemen Albert Baur led the way with 3 hits and 3 RBI. Outfielder Hunter Owen also added 3 hits and 2 RBI.
Jonathan Padilla received the loss in this game, going only 4.2 innings, allowing 4 runs. His ERA is a dismal, 7.71 this year. Claudio Custodio had a good game out of relief, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing only 1 earned run.
The Yankees will look to get back on the winning end Thursday Night as they take on West Virginia for the 2nd game of this 3 game set. Adonis Rosa will take the hill and will try to get his first win of the year.
