The Johnnies fell to DePaul 83-75 last night, at Allstate Arena. DePaul came out strong from tipoff, looking for redemption after losing to the Johnnies at Carnesecca Arena a week earlier. The game was tied at 17, until the Blue Demons opened a 19-6 run. They maintained a 17 point lead heading to halftime, shooting an astonishing 65.5%.
DePaul would continue their large lead throughout the second half. DePaul went up by 21 with 18 minutes left in the second half, however, St. John’s would open a 10-2 run fueled by a pair of 3s by Johnson and Mvouika.
DePaul would fight off St. John’s late-game rally, as the Johnnies pressure defense led to quick buckets. They were able to trim the lead to 6, 77-71. However, key free throws by DePaul proved to be the difference, as they knocked down all 6 in their last three trips to the charity strike. Overall, the Johnnies played a good game, battling back all the way from 21 points but fell short in the end.
The Johnnies had four players score double-digits. Ron Mvouika led the way with a season-high 20 points. Durand Johnson contributed 15 points for his team-leading 20th double-digit scoring performance of the season. Overall, Durand and Mvouika were responsible for 9 out of the 10 3-pointers St. John’s made.
St. John’s will continue its two-game road stretch as they visit Creighton on Sunday. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
