Somerset strings together four straight wins on road trip

If Somerset’s latest seven game road trip doesn’t indicate the up-and-down season they’re having, who knows what will.

The Patriots dropped the first two games against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs which saw their losing skid amount to seven. However they seemed to find light in the worst circumstances and strung together a four game winning streak.

Somerset had mustered up 11 runs over the seven game spell. It was only fitting that they scored as many runs in their series finale against the Blue Crabs in an 11-5 win.

The Patriots also got a much needed boost in the outfield with the return of Jimmy Paredes, who missed time with a dislocated finger, and Michael Crouse who rejoined the team after playing with Team Canada at the Pan-American Games in Lima, Peru.

Somerset manager Brett Jodie was forced to play infielders Will Kengor, who owns a slash line of .321/.381/.505 and leads the team in home runs with 12, along with Scott Kelly in the outfield due to the absence of Paredes and Crouse.

They added more depth and signed outfielder Teodoro Martinez on Aug. 5 who provides a quality bat to the lineup. Martinez’s services were put to work early as he homered off York pitcher Joe Jones in the third inning with two on and one out.

The long ball was one of a season-high five home runs on the day as the Patriots recorded their largest margin of victory this season with a 16-1 final. Against a powerful Revolution lineup as Somerset recorded season-highs in runs scored in a game and in a single inning.

Another notable stat from the game was that the Patriots went 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Somerset pitcher Rick Teasley (3-1) earned the win and avenged his previous start where York’s powerful lineup scored 11 of its 13 runs off Teasley.

York and Somerset split the last two games but the Patriots secured the season series at 12-9.

Somerset returns home on Aug. 9 for six games against the Sugar Land Skeeters and the Lancaster Barnstormers.
