Sky Blue Select Evelyne Viens with No. 5 overall pick in NWSL College Draft
The 2020 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) College Draft began with an influx of trades. Sky Blue FC entered the draft holding the No. 2 and No. 3 overall picks. However, prior to the draft beginning, the club traded those picks and dropped down to No. 4 and No. 5 overall.
Before the No. 4 pick came, Sky Blue once again made a trade. They New Jersey club would acquire a player to be named later from the Washington Spirit in exchange for the 4th, 13th, and 17th overall selections in this years’ draft as well as a 1st round pick in the 2021 draft. That’s quite a load to give up unless the player coming to Sky Blue is one that can make a significant difference.
Once the trades calmed, Sky Blue was on the clock with for No. 5 overall selection. With the pick, Sky Blue selected Evelyne Viens, a forward from the University of South Florida. By acquiring Viens, Sky Blue gets a player known as a flat out goal scorer. Viens plays, and Viens scores. Scoring goals is something Sky Blue has struggled with the past couple years.
Viens finished the 2019 season with 25 goals and three assists. She should be someone that is capable of stepping in right away and providing an offensive spark for Sky Blue.
Sky Blue FC certainly felt Viens could be a difference maker on their roster. They selected Viens so high despite knowing it would require an international spot.
