Seth Lugo (Amazin’ Avenue)

It wasn’t that long ago that the Mets had enough depth to hold them down for the season. A few injuries later, and the team took a detour to Panic City. The latest setback for the team regards Seth Lugo. In a press release, the Mets stated Lugo as been diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He will be missing at least two weeks.

As of this moment, Seth Lugo does not need Tommy John surgery. The Mets seem more concerned about that option. They believe its a possibility depending on how his treatment goes. Rest is key for an injury like this. Speaking to the media, GM Sandy Alderson stated:

“The doctors are optimistic that he can avoid surgery. But we would not have put in the surgical reference in the press release if we didn’t think that was a possibility.”

Rafael Montero will be in the bullpen during this time. Depending on how he does, someone else might have to go down if Lugo was available to return.

Playing in the World Baseball Classic could have been a factor in the injury. The 27-year old had a big role in the tournament, pitching in the final game against Team USA. While he didn’t show any sign of injury, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t a lingering issue. When asked by Marc Carig of Newsday if he’d pitch in the WBC again if he had a do over, Lugo was hesitant. He went on to say he would wait and see how the next few weeks go.

If the injury is a result of the WBC, it provides more evidence from those against the tournament. Sandy Alderson stated the team was committed to the idea of it, but that could also change depending on Lugo’s condition.

While Robert Gsellman and Zach Wheeler can hold down the rest of the pitching staff, having Lugo on the team is a comforting feeling for the Mets. Time will tell where the Mets and Lugo go from here.
