Send Liberty Stars to the Lone Star State

Imagine your favorite Liberty players donning a 10-gallon hat while wearing chaps and spurs. It’s a drastic change from shorts and sneakers, but there’s a chance you might catch Cappie Pondexter and her teammates in garb from the wild, wild west.

Voting for the WNBA All-Star Game is underway, and the hometown ladies of Liberty hope their fans select them to participate. Online and text message balloting ends at midnight July 10, and the starters will be announced July 14. The midseason classic takes place July 23 in San Antonio.

The Eastern Conference ballot includes New York’s five starters from opening day. Pondexter, a four-time All-Star selection, is shaking off a slow scoring start and is now fourth among East guards with a 15.8 ppg average (through six games).

Essence Carson, on the ballot as a guard, ranks 10th in the Eastern Conference in scoring, while forward Plenette Pierson and center Kia Vaughn are in the top 20. Nicole Powell is on the ballot under the forward position.

This year’s game returns to traditional East vs. West fashion. In 2010, the game pitted WNBA All Stars against the USA Basketball team. Team USA, which featured WNBA stars such as Pondexter, Diana Taurasi and Tina Charles, won the game 99-72.

Things are always bigger in Texas, and this year’s All-Star Game will be as grand as ever. Let’s make sure our Liberty players are there to represent New York/New Jersey and show off their talents.

So if you’re a fan or not (or if you’ve exhausted your MLB All-Star tallies and still have that itch to fill out a ballot), visit WNBA.com and cast your votes. Details for text message voting are also online.
