Rocky Fielding looking to make a dream come true inside MSG while also playing spoiler against Canelo
Can Fielding dig deep and change the script many have already written for this fight against Canelo?
Does Rocky Fielding really stand a chance against Canelo Alvarez?
That has been the question on everyone’s mind since it was announced that the 31-year-old Fielding (27-1) would be facing Canelo (50-1-2) inside Madison Square Garden on Saturday, December 15. Born in Liverpool, Fielding has been waiting for this moment all of his life. Inside The World’s Most Famous Arena, Fielding feels like a kid again, even more the case after making a promise to himself many years ago.
“It’s great to be here. I was here years ago, sitting right at the top over there, watching a Knicks game, wishing one day to fight here,” Fielding stated at the final Canel/Fielding press conference. “Now I’ve put a lot of work in, I’ve had a lot of setbacks, and here we are. It’s unbelievable. I’m looking forward to it.”
Setbacks have included losing to Callum Smith back in 2015 to end his 21-fight win streak at the time. The super-middleweight rebounded in a major way, winning his next six. Now, the mighty Canelo moves to his weight class in order to dethrone the WBA Super-Middleweight Champion.
Many are eager to point out Rocky by that name alone, recognizing the legendary movie character that has helped continue to make boxing popular. If the champion, like Balboa, is considered an underdog here, then that is the role he is willing to play in order to reach victory.
“I believe in myself“, Rocky continued. “I come here as a champion, and that’s what champions do – they win, and they defend. This is a great opportunity and I’m very happy to be here.”
The taller Rocky will look to use his size against a man many claim to be the best boxer in the world today. Will his height be a disadvantage, especially if Canelo can utilize his knockout power towards body shots? Perhaps, but Fielding’s twelve wins via decision has proven how durable he is against even the toughest of opponents. With 15 knockouts, Fielding is no pushover.
What would a mean win for Fielding? For one, his legacy will be of a legend killer. He could also play the role of spoiler, as Canelo v. Daniel Jacobs in 2019 has been teased for a while. In the world of boxing, anything can happen, and an upset by Fielding could make this sport have a much-needed moment. DAZN, the key home to this Matchroom Boxing/Golden Boy Promotions clash, are hoping for any outcome that will shock the world and bring in as much money as possible.
In the end, Canelo’s smooth movement could be too much for Fielding to handle. However, Fielding will not go down easily and look to create a moment he or those inside MSG will never forget.
From sitting in the seats to the spotlight, it has all come full circle for Rocky Fielding. Can the boyhood dream come true, or will the clock strike midnight?
