Red Bulls Hope to Turn Fortunes around in the Cup
Red Bulls set to take on the Atlanta Silverbacks.
Almost a year to the date since their defeat, the New York Red Bulls will try to reverse their fortunes in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Last season they traveled to Shuart Stadium on Long Island to take on the New York Cosmos in the fourth round of the cup where they failed to score, losing 3-0 and dropping out of the competition.
This time around the Red Bulls will be at home at Red Bull Arena to take on the Atlanta Silverbacks. The Silverbacks, like the Cosmos, play in the NASL. However, unlike the Cosmos, the Silverbacks are not a very good team. Yes, they may have reached the fourth round, but they finished the spring season of the NASL in last place with only one victory. Add in being in their own stadium and the Red Bulls have a lot of hope for finally winning this fixture.
The Red Bulls have never won this competition — the closest they came was in 2003 when they were the runner ups. Since the competition expanded in 2012, the Red Bulls have not advanced out of the fourth round. In fact they have only one victory in the competition since 2007. For the Red Bulls to finally lift the trophy for the first time they’ll have to navigate through five rounds of single elimination play.
The Red Bulls have cooled off considerably in their recent matches in the MLS, letting a couple of late leads slip away. It will be important for them to ride the momentum of the crowd and get off to a quick start. If they can get an early lead, it will go a long way towards navigating their way through the fourth round and having more US Open Cup Matches in the near future.
The fourth round match against Atlanta is June 16th at 7:30 PM with https://www.newyorkredbulls.com/ providing a live stream of the match.
