NJAC Announces All-Conference Men’s Basketball Honors
Pitman, NJ—New Jersey City University junior forward Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown) and Rowan University senior forward Ramon Wright (Newark, NJ/Irvington) have been selected as the “Pony Wilson” Men’s Basketball Player of the Year and the league Defensive Player of the Year respectively in the New Jersey Athletic Conference for the 2018-19 season. Their selections highlighted the 15-member 2018-19 NJAC men’s basketball all-conference team which was announced on February 19. All selections were made via a vote of the league’s 10 head coaches and were based on conference-only statistics.
Toney earned the NJAC Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season, becoming just the fifth student-athlete to claim the award in back-to-back seasons and the first since former William Paterson great Horace Jenkins in 1999-00 and 2000-01. A three-time all-conference selection, Toney finished NJAC play ranked second in conference-only free throw percentage (.878) and third in conference-only rebounding (7.4 per game). A Week 9 NJAC Player of the Week honoree this year, Toney also finished fourth in conference-only three-point field goal percentage (.432), fifth in conference-only scoring (16.1 points per game), and eighth in conference-only blocks (0.8 per game).
Wright was tapped as the conference’s top defender after finishing NJAC play as the league-leader in conference-only blocks (1.9 per game), while also ranking second in conference-only steals (2.3 per game). A three-time NJAC all-conference selection, Wright also finished second in conference-only field goal percentage (.565), and fifth in conference-only rebounding (6.4 per game).
Kean University freshman guard Jailen Jamison (Bronx, NY/Phelps School) was named the NJAC Rookie of the Year. A seven-time NJAC Rookie of the Week selection during the 2018-19 season, Jamison finished his first NJAC season ranked third in conference-only assists (4.0 per game) and seventh in conference-only steals (1.7 per game). Jamison also finished 16th in both conference-only scoring (12.2 points per game) and conference-only rebounding (5.2 per game).
New Jersey City University head coach Marc Brown was named the “John K. Adams” Coach of the Year by his peers for the third time in his career. So far in 2018-19, Brown has guided the Gothic Knights to a 19-6 overall record and the NJAC regular season championship via a league best 14-4 mark in conference play. Now in his 12th season at the helm of the NJCU program, Brown has produced an overall record of 195-128 during his tenure in Jersey City.
