Mets future 1st Baseman shows potential in spring opener

Ike Davis is showing the Mets how much potential he has and could be making a push for a roster spot.

The Mets organization may not think Ike Davis is Major League ready just yet, but the young first baseman will see plenty of action in spring training. With the Mets resting most of their regulars in yesterdays spring opener, Davis got the start at first base against the Atlanta Braves.

There were some first day jitters as Davis misjudged a foul territory pop up. The first baseman did admit to feeling a bit uncomfortable in the field yesterday. Let’s not pass any judgements just yet, it was afterall the first spring game of the season and he wasn’t expecting to start. Not that it’s an excuse though.

He did however show what he can do at the plate. Davis went 2 for 3 including a double in the right center field gap yesterday against the Braves.

The Mets may not think he is quite ready yet, but he certainly is not far away. Davis was the organizations first round pick in 2008 and has excellend in the minors. Just 22 years old, Davis spent last season in Double-A with the Binghamton Mets. He hit .309 with 13 home runs in just 55 games. He also played in the Arizona Fall League and hit .341.

The team knows Davis is likely their first baseman of the future, its just a matter of how soon the future arrives.

“There’s a lot of excitement around when we mention his name, and I’d like to see him as much as possible just to get a feel for him,” Manuel said. “I understand he’s a tremendous, tremendous first baseman. He’s a guy that, it’s impactful when he puts a good swing on it.”

Daniel Murphy is expected to see most of the innings at first base this year and possibly platoon with Fernando Tatis. Mike Jacobs is also in the mix for time at first base. I could easily see all three of this players being disappointments. If that happens, the Mets will be hard pressed not to bring Davis up and see what he can do.

Mets fans, you have a player on your hands.
