Lomachenko defeats Linares in a Madison Square Garden slugfest
After ten epic rounds, Lomachenko makes history inside Madison Square Garden
Don’t let anyone fool you, Vasyl Lomachenko put on the performance of a lifetime against Jorge Linares inside The World’s Most Famous Arena. While he did face adversity by getting dropped for the first time, Lomachenko overcame it by dropping Linares with a left shot to the liver. While Linares beat the count, the ref ended up stopping the fight. As a result, Lomachenko became the new WBA Lightweight Champion.
With that win, Vasyl (11-1) has cemented his legacy as one of the fastest-rising stars in boxing. Let’s break it down, shall we?
Throughout the bout, Lomachenko didn’t give Linares a chance to breath. With several shots to the body of Lineres (44-4), the 30-year old Ukrainian dominated the first few rounds. His right hooks were as deadly as ever, and the crowd inside Madison Square Garden was eating it up.
It wasn’t all fun and games for Lomachenko. Linares was able to get a hold of him. He dropped Lomachenko in round six. It was at that moment that the crowd saw there was still life in the body of Linares.
From there, it became a slugfest of epic proportions. Linares started playing the aggressor, making it seem like he had a chance to get back into it. Vasyl was pressing forward however, not giving Linares any chance to breath. It wasn’t until the tenth round when Lomachenko finished things off.
The judges had the fight at an even score before the knockdown, which is incredible to picture when watching the fight. Nonetheless, a rematch is on the table, whenever the timing is right.
Now the Lightweight Champion, Lomachenko is the fastest man in boxing history to win three world championships. He did so in his 12th pro bout. On top of the world, Vasyl Lomachenko made a statement, and is looking to continue making it for years to come.
