Lakewood explodes for five runs in eighth in win over Hagerstown
The host Lakewood BlueClaws blew open a one-run game, erupting for five runs in the eighth inning in their 9-3 conquest of the Hagerstown (Md.) Suns on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Park in South Atlantic League action.
Lakewood, the Philadelphia Phillies’ low Class A farm team, sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth.
Carlos Duran hit an RBI double to begin the explosion. Zach Coppola followed with a two-run single and Damek Tomscha and Deivi Grullon followed with RBI singles in front of 4,427 fans.
Lakewood (26-38) has won five straight home games and two in a row to begin the series against the Washington Nationals’ farm club. Hagerstown is 40-25.
Coppola, Jiandido Tromp, Tomscha, Jan Hernandez, Brendon Hayden and Duran all had two hits for Lakewood. Duran plated three runs.
The Suns took a 2-0 lead against Lakewood’s Harold Arauz in the second as Austin Davidson hit an RBI single and scored on a wild pitch.
Lakewood pulled to within 2-1 in the third on an RBI double by Tromp off the left-field wall.
The BlueClaws swung ahead in the fourth. Hayden lofted a sacrifice fly and Duran poked a two-run single for a 4-2 lead
Arauz (3-4) was the winner, allowing two runs (both earned) in five innings. He struck out four and walked three while yielding three hits He owns a 3.38 earned run average.
Jake Waguespack, who allowed an eighth-inning run, pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the year.
The Suns’ Pedro Avila (5-4) suffered the loss in a starting role, allowing four runs (three earned) in five innings.
The series concludes Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. when righty Franklyn Kilome (1-5, 4.96 earned run average) takes the ball against right-hander Jefry Rodriguez (5-2, 2.89).
