Lakewood Completes Sweep Of Lexington With Hail Shortened Game

Harold Arauz pitched five scoreless innings to power the host Lakewood BlueClaws past the Lexington (Ky.) Legends 6-0 in South Atlantic League play at FirstEnergy Park in front of 3,525 fans Wednesday.

Lakewood, the Philadelphia Phillies’ low Class A farm team, erupted for five runs in the fourth inning to push its record to 23-35 and sweep the three-game series with the Legends (22-36), the Kansas City Royals’ affiliate.

The BlueClaws escaped last place in the Northern Division. They are sixth in the seven-team division. Lakewood has won three straight games and is 5-5 in its last 10 outings.

The game was called in the bottom of the fifth by the umpires because of a rain and hail storm.

Arauz (2-4) allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked none. Arauz, who hails from Panama, was acquired from the Houston Astros with pitchers Mark Appel, Vincent Velasquez ad Thomas Eshelman for pitcher Ken Giles and infielder Jonathan Arauz on Dec. 123, 2015. Harold Arauz was originally signed by Houston as an amateur free agent July 12, 2011.

Lakewood scored an unearned run in the second when Jan Hernandez doubled home Austin Bossart, who had reached on an error.

The BlueClaws blew the game open in the fourth, banging out six straight hits.

Carlos Duran opened the scoring with an RBI double. Venn Bitter, Emmanuel Marrero and Jiandido Tromp followed with run-scoring singles and Josh Tobias capped the scoring with a sacrfice fly.

Loser Josh Blewett (3-6) allowed six runs including five earned, through 3 1/3 innings. Tobias and Hernandez stroked two hits each.

The sweep was Lakewood’s second of the season. It swept a four-game series from the Virginia Power, a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate, May 12-15.

The BlueClaws will visit the Delmarva (Md.) Shorebirds, a Baltimore Orioles farm club, for a four-game weekend series. Lakewood right-hander Franklyn Kilome (1-5) will oppose righty Francisco Jimenez (4-5) Thursday night.
