Big win for La Salle Women’s Basketball over VCU
Last Thursday, La Salle took on VCU at home on their annual “Kids Day” game. The arena was packed with nearly 1,400 kids from local Philadelphia area elementary schools. One cannot help but think that the crowded Tom Gola Arena helped the Explorers to their 62-57 victory over VCU.
Early on in the first quarter, La Salle was in a slump as VCU used that to their advantage. The Rams sunk seven baskets before La Salle finally responded to the early barrage. It was a close contest for the majority of the first half although, toward the end of the second quarter, the Rams began to stretch the lead by eight points.
It was in the second half where the Explorers started to take off with the lead and not look back. Over the course of the third and fourth quarters, La Salle went on a 14-0 run to take a 44-38 lead.
Even though the VCU began to answer back, it was never strong enough to sweep the La Salle lead away. The Rams were able to cut the lead to 47-45 but could not surpass the Explorers.
Amy Griffin had a game-high of 26-points with just 17 within the first quarter. Adreanna Miller had 16 which helped La Salle stay afloat while Sofilia Ngwafang added 10.
Ashanti Freeland added to the success with a team-high of eight rebounds. Both Griffin and Miller both grabbed seven rebounds each.
