Jet Up – Jets blow out Raiders for third straight win
The New York Jets (4-7) may not be making the playoffs this season (or may they?) but they’ve put together an impressive winning streak. The first two wins were over the lowly Washington Redskins and New York Giants, but Sunday’s 34-3 win against the Oakland Raiders (6-5) proved that the Jets could hang with good teams as well.
The teams traded field goals for the only scores in the first quarter but it was all Jets from the second quarter on. Sam Darnold scored on a four yard scamper and Sam Ficken kicked a 35 yard field goal to end the half on a high note.
Ryan Griffin, recently signed to an extension with the Jets, proved to be worth the investment this week as Darnold found him for a one yard touchdown. Darnold stayed hot in the third quarter, throwing another one yard touchdown pass to Robbie Anderson.
The play of the game was a deflected pass from Derek Carr that wound up in the hands of Brian Poole. Poole caught it one handed and cradled it in, taking it 15 yards to the house to put the game completely out of reach. The defense shut down Josh Jacobs (ten carries, 34 yards) and outmatched Carr so badly that the Raiders put in Mike Glennon to finish the game.
The defense has been the crux to the success, but the extended use of Le’Veon Bell and the confidence of Sam Darnold has helped. Bell was doing it all, rushing 12 times for 49 yards and catching five passes for 59 yards. Darnold’s day wasn’t otherworldly, but he did go 20-for-29 for 315 yards, two touchdowns and a rushing TD.
Can the Jets run the table and sneak in as a wild card team? Probably not but it’s an encouraging sign to see them actually play for their coach. For all the flak that Adam Gase rightfully gets, he also deserves credit for somewhat turning this season around and getting the Jets back to their winning ways.
