Infield Powers Yankees To Win Over Texas
The New York Yankees offense continued its pounding of the Texas Rangers last night in a 12-4 victory at Yankee Stadium. Starting pitcher Ivan Nova was not at his best, but was good enough, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks in 5.2 innings.
It was the Yankees offense, particularly the infielders that carried the Bombers to their second straight win and fifth in the past six games.
The infield of Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano, Eduardo Nunez, and Ramiro Pena provided the power. Combined, the four players went 9-for-18 with five home runs and nine runs batted in. Teixeira was the offensive player of the game with two homers and four RBI’s, going through 3-for-5 on the night.
Eduardo Nunez started at shortstop once again as Derek Jeter was placed on the disabled list before Tuesday nights game. Pena got the start at third base last night because Yankees manager Joe Girardi gave Alex Rodriguez half a day off as the designated hitter.
To add even more production to their night, Cano and Nunez each had a stolen base as well.
New York is now 38-28 on the season and remain in second place in the American League East, 1.5 games behind Boston.
The Yankees have outscored Texas 24-8 through the first two games of this three game series. New York will be looking for the sweep this afternoon as newly signed minor league veteran Brian Gordon gets the start. The Yankees signed Gordon after he opted out of his minor league deal with the Phillies.
Gordon is a 32 year old pitcher with four pitches, a curveball, slider, and changeup to go along with his fastball. He was 5-0 this season for the Phillies Triple-A squad and posted an International League best 1.14 ERA.
The only major league experience Gordon has to this point is three relief appearances for the Texas Rangers in 2008. He had given up one run and four hits in four innings. Gordon is taking the spot of Bartolo Colon who was recently placed on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.
