Hofstra Takes Down JMU, Advances to Semifinals
The Hofstra Pride men’s basketball team opened the CAA tournament against the team that ruined senior night for them, the James Madison Dukes. JMU was coming off an emotional victory over Towson where Matt Lewis knocked down a three in the closing seconds to give the Dukes a one-point victory. The Pride never trailed and finished with a nine-point win, 76-67.
Senior guard Justin Wright-Foreman led the Pride in points with 17 despite shooting just 5-for-16 from the field. The rest of the team picked up the slack, however, with four other Hofstra players recording double-digit point afternoons. Jacquil Taylor was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and notched a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Hofstra’s starters combined for 63 points.
The Dukes were led by Sophomore guard Matt Lewis who had 23 points while fellow Sophomore guard Darius Banks contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds. No other Duke had more than nine points.
James Madison made a few runs in the second half to close the gap but the Pride remained strong and countered every run with one of their own. The Pride continue their chase for the conference championship Monday as the face the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens at six pm.
