Geno Smith Out 6-10 Weeks With Broken Jaw
IK Enemkpali released after punching QB
New York Jets quarterback, Geno Smith, will reportedly be out 6-10 weeks after suffering a broken jaw in a locker room altercation with linebacker IK Enemkpali. Enemkpali was a sixth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He was immediately released by the team after he “sucker-punched” Smith, breaking his jaw.
Head coach Todd Bowles was not happy with the incident.
“You can’t tolerate that,” he told reporters. “When you have a team and a bunch of side issues you can’t tolerate that. It’s something that happened in the locker room and we’re dealing with it internally and that’s what we’ll do.”
Smith, a second-round pick (39th overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft, won the starting QB job rookie season. He has thrown for 5,571 yards, with 25 TDs and 34 INTs, and he has also fumbled 15 times. His combined record in his two seasons under center is 12-20 (8-8 in 2013, 4-12 in 2014).
The Jets open their season in four and a half weeks at home against the Cleveland Browns, so the best-case scenario is that he will miss that game, as well as possibly the following game against the Indianapolis Colts. If Smith is indeed out for the 10 weeks, as Bowles said is possible, that would have him returning in Week 6 against the Washington Redskins or Week 7 against the New England Patriots.
