Frankie Edgar gets momentum back at UFC Atlantic City v. Cub Swanson
A fast turnaround ended up benefiting instead of derailing Frankie Edgar at UFC Atlantic City
All it took was the energy of some hometown friends and family to get “The Answer” back into the swing of things. Facing a familiar opponent in Cub Swanson, Frankie Edgar didn’t appear to show any signs of trouble. He soundly defeated Swanson via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) in Atlantic City for UFC Fight Night 128.
Edgar (23-6-1) took control of the entire bout, looking agile and raring to go. The one aspect of his fight game that Swanson was able to control early on was the ground game. Cub swatted away every takedown attempt Edgar was working on. It wasn’t until round two in which Edgar provided an extreme amount of pressure onto Cub.
Using fancy footwork, Edgar’s fast hands clipped his opponent a few times, busting him open before the second round ended. By the third, both fighters landed brutal punches to one another, but Frankie Edgar would not slow down. He pressured Swanson into the cage enough to tire him out until the third round ended.
This was a fight that many thought shouldn’t have even taken place at all. It was just a few weeks ago when Edgar was defeated by replacement opponent Brian Ortega at UFC 222. Being the ultimate fighter, he accepted an opportunity to face Swanson (25-9), a man he defeated back in 2014. Lady luck ended up being on his side, as he fought and won on the boardwalk him and his friends know so well. This was his first fight in New Jersey since he defeated Spencer Fisher at UFC 78 in 2007. He made sure to thank the fans for their continued support of him while also stating there is much more left in the tank.
“This was a dream come true to come here and perform in front of my home state. I love you guys… You put your mind to something and you can do it. I’m not going anywhere!”
