Eddie Alvarez looking to get back on track at ONE: Dawn of Heroes
When he was signed to ONE Championship, there wasn’t a lot of pressure on Eddie Alvarez to act a certain way. That was because Alvarez does all of his promotion with his hands. Placed in the Lightweight Grand-Prix for ONE, Alvarez (29-7, 1NC) was considered a favorite.
Not everything could come to fruition, however.
Alvarez lost to Timofey Nastyukhin back in March at A New Era via TKO. A shocking way to debut, the former UFC Lightweight Champion had to go back to the drawing board. Add onto the fact that he is 1-3 with one no-contest in six fights, it has been a strange few years for the Philadelphia native. Alvarez now looks to get back on track at ONE: Dawn of Heroes in August against former ONE Lightweight Champion Eduard Folayang.
Taking place inside the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines on August 2, ONE: Dawn of Heroes already has a stacked card outside of Alvarez v. Folayang. Another former UFC veteran, Demetrious Johnson will face Tatsumitsu Wada in a Flyweight Grand-Prix semi-final match. The co-main event will feature Jonathan Haggerty defending his ONE Muay Thai Flyweight Championship against Rodtang Jitmuangnon. Fighting in the main event will be Martin Nguyen v. Koyomi Matushima for the ONE Featherweight Championship.
A former ONE Lightweight Champion, Folayang (21-7) is also looking to get back on track. After going 7-1 in his last eights fights, Folayang lost the Lightweight Title to Shinya Aoki at A New Era.
While it won’t be easy, Alvarez’s rise back to the top will be as competitive as ever. If his career is any indication, this will be just what the doctor, in this case, “The Underground King”, ordered.
