DGS Main Event MMA Feud of the Year: Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz

This is one of those article topics that I feel proud to have been present in the sport of mixed martial arts for. This is something that down the line I’ll tell my kids about as one of the biggest catalysts in MMA history. And man, was it FUN.

Earlier this year when the plan of Conor McGregor fighting for the UFC lightweight championship against former champ Rafael Dos Anjos in March got derailed just 11 days before the fight, fight fans thought they just witnessed a pay-per-view crumble before their eyes.

Then Nate Diaz took a break from doing tequila shots and soaking in the sun in Mexico to answer a call that would not only change the popularity of the sport and the UFC collectively, but his long professional career.

Diaz stepped up on just 11 days notice to face McGregor in (what I’m still trying to figure out why) a 170-pound main event fight to save UFC 196.

As soon as the first press conference, quickly thrown together at a UFC Gym in California, started, no one cared that this wasn’t for a belt, or a weight class that made any sense, because these two has a chemistry that fight promoters could only dream of.

The best way to really pay tribute to this feud is through a compilation video for many reasons, but mostly because I would definitely get fired for typing out that many f-bombs in a single article.

Diaz went on to defeat McGregor at UFC 196 via second rear naked choke. Following the defeat, McGregor called for an immediate rematch, also at 170-pounds, at UFC 202 in August. McGregor avenged his loss against Diaz, earning a decision victory in the sequel.

While the fans hope for the trilogy at 155-pounds in 2017, UFC President Dana White has been set on the rubber match not taking place. Regardless if we ever do see the third fight happen, this will forever go down as one of the best feuds in MMA history.
