Amed Rosario (Newsday)

The future is finally arriving for the Mets. Amed Rosario, the teams number one prospect according to MLB.com, will be making his major league debut tomorrow. GM Sandy Alderson made the announcement via conference call. Rosario will get his first taste of the big leagues in Colorado, where the Mets will be playing the Rockies in a three game series.

According to Alderson, the plan for nearly six weeks was for Rosario to make his debut in early August. Looking at #MetsTwitter after, fans would have wanted Rosario on the team six weeks ago, and for good reason. In 94 games with Triple-A Las Vegas this season, Rosario was hitting .328 with seven home runs, 58 RBI’s and 19 stolen bases.

The 21-year old will look to play every day as Jose Reyes’ role with the team diminishes. An injured T.J. Rivera was also a factor in the move. Jose could play third base along with Asdrubal Cabrera while Neil Walker plays at second. Wilmer Flores will go back to his role as a utility man off the bench. It is unknown how many games Rosario will get under his belt, but he will make the most of his opportunity. When talking about moving players around, Alderson stated:

“We wanted to get through the deadline and try to resolve some of the positional issues we had. We’ve seen that Cabrera has moved to second and then third. We think Jose Reyes can also play well at second. Walker can play some first base and third base. So, the flexibility our infielders poses now give Amed the opportunity to play shortstop.”

In regards to first baseman Dominic Smith, the teams number two prospect, Alderson stated that he is not far behind. Smith is hitting .343 in 105 games in Las Vegas.

Alderson made the announcement just after the Trade Deadline ended. A key piece of the Mets’ future, Rosario has a chance to show the league what he can do. I’m sure all eyes, especially those in New York, will be on him.

There is just one question to ask to Rosario and the fans: Are you ready?
