The Atlanta Braves, also known as the worst team in the National League, came into Citi Field and tomahawked the New York Mets for a three-game sweep. Wednesday night’s game saw the Mets lose 4-3 in the most heartbreaking fashion possible.

The Mets had led the game almost the whole way, 3-0, thanks to a two-run home run from Asdrubal Cabrera and a solo shot from Rene Rivera. With the ageless wonder, Bartolo Colon, cruising, it seemed that the Mets would salvage the final game of the series. But the Braves scored two in the seventh, one in the eighth, and one more in the ninth to give them a 4-3 lead.

The Mets left the bases loaded in the eighth, but they had one last shot in the bottom of the nine. With two runners on base and two outs, Yoenis Cespedes hit what seemed to be a game-winning home run to right-center field. However, Ender Inciarte brought it back to end the game.

It was a heartbreaking loss to say the least. Getting swept by the Braves is not what the Mets had in mind when the series began on Monday. Luckily they still own a Wild Card spot. The Cardinals took two out of three from the Rockies and the Giants have lost two of three with the Dodgers so far. resutling in a three-way tie for the first Wild Card spot with ten games left to play.

In those ten games, the Mets (80-72) will play the Philadelphia Phillies seven times with four at home starting on Thursday. The other three games will be against the Marlins on the road. The Giants still have to play three more with the Dodgers while the Cardinals have another series with the Cubs. So the schedules definitely favor the Mets in the final ten games.

The Mets have to have a quick memory and wipe away the brutal loss from Wednesday night and focus on Philadelphia on Thursday night at Citi Field. Should the Mets miss the playoffs, hopefully this series against the Braves is not the reason.
