If you have not visited BabesDigBalls.com, you really are missing out on some fun sports coverage. The website is run by women that know and love sports and geared toward women. We continue our Women’s History Month Interview Series today with an interview with Miranda Furtado, the founder of StatsStyleScore.com.
Miranda Furtado: SSS kind of started as a joke, to be completely honest!
After going through the interviewing process with an NHL team, I realized that I needed to have more sports on my résumé. Since I have a publishing and broadcasting background, I figured that I’d take the initiative to start a funny Tumblr account, so I’d have something to show potential employers, if needed.
Needless to say, it snowballed. I ended up purchasing Sports Babe of the Day, and, well, as they say, the rest is history. Just over a year later, here we sit with 45+ writers across North America!
DGS: It’s a site run completely by women. How did that idea come about?
MF: It started out of necessity. Getting experience for a job is a double edge sword. You need experience to get a job, but without a job, how do you get experience? On top of that, getting into the sports industry as a female is tough. I really just put the two together and found a pile of ladies with the same end goals.
DGS: You have the website, popular social media accounts, a radio show, a TV show. What’s next? What else do you and the staff have planned for 2014 and beyond?
MF: If I told you, I’d have to kill you.
DGS: Were sports a thing you were always interested in growing up, or did that develop later on?
MF: Always — but in a different way. I grew up in the country so pond hockey and road hockey were always a staple. But I really had a passion for extreme sports. I had a dirt bike by the age of 8 or 9 (a little Honda 50 — that thing could rip!) and when I got older, I turned to skateboarding and snowboarding. I actually taught snowboarding for about 5 years before moving to Whistler to live out the good ol’ dream. **Miranda also played hockey and soccer for her school teams. **
DGS: If you could play one sport professionally, what would it be and why?
MF: Maybe volleyball…mainly for the tan and the body — does that count? Haha. But for realsies — Probably snowboarding. I love (and miss!) the lifestyle.
DGS: Was/Is there a particular woman in sports that you look at as a role model? Someone that maybe you try to model your work in sports media after?
MF: Not really, to be honest. It’s not that I don’t think anyone is worthy, but I’m exhausted of trying to “fit in” or be a certain way. I think a big reason why Stats Style Score has such a following is because I’ve based it on myself and have purposely tried to break the mold. It’s different. It’s unique and it works.
DGS: You, as well as your sit,e are based out of Canada. We all know hockey is a big deal up there, but how would you compare other sports there to what they are here in the United States? What is the following like?
MF: Hahhaa. HUGE! I’m not sure what it would be comparable to…but, it’s not just us! Almost all of our hockey writers, which is our biggest writing “team” on the site, is based out of the US!
DGS: Women’s sports are slowly catching on and growing here in the US. What is it like in Canada? Do people pay attention to women in sports?
is completely female-run, we differentiate ourselves from other female sports sites because its not just by females for females. It’s really about giving females a voice in a male-dominated industry.
DGS: Other than sports, tell us what else you are passionate about. What else drives you?
MF: Work. Is that lame? I spend almost all of my time working on Babes Dig Balls. I have ADD, so my brain never really shuts off. I’m always concocting something new. (Insert evil laugh here MUAHAHAHAAA!)
Other than SSS, though, I’m obsessed with my dog. Admittedly, it’s gotten to a pathetic point. Shameless plug: you can follow him on Instagram @ElvisWrestley
Yeah, it’s THAT bad.
DGS: What is one “off the wall” crazy fact about Miranda Furtado?
MF: I really like sandwiches and have serious pet peeve with bad “sandwich artists” at Subway. If you call yourself an “artist”, at least make sure the toppings stay ON the sub. I work hard for my money, too!
DGS: If you could host a dinner with three women in sports, past or present, who would they be and why?
MF: Lindsey Vonn, Ronda Rousey and Shauna White (wait, that joke doesn’t work now that he’s cut his hair, now does it?)
