It was a night full of surprises. Germany defeated England securing its 2nd place, which gave the U.S team a greater chance to win the SheBelieves Cup. A win against France would have proclaimed the young USWNT champions. But that did not happen; France fought harder on the field, created more opportunities and converted, giving them a 3-0 victory over the USWNT.

The rainy weather did not affect the team of Les Bleues. In full throttle and within 10 minutes, France was winning 2-0 against the U.S. The first goal came after a penalty kick in the 8th minute. Only 2 minutes after, Wendie Renard’s pass is caught by Eugénie Le Sommer, who outran Allie Long in the US defense and ended up putting the ball in the net.

Mallory Pugh and Crystal Dunn came in for the second half and both saw some action. Dunn had a close opportunity that ended up in France’s goalkeeper, Meline Gerard’s hands. Then in the 56th minute, Pugh finds a space to shut from the left wing, but once again Gerard was attentive and punched the ball clear.

France was not done yet. In the 63rd minute, Eve Perisset ran full speed on the right side, crossed the ball to Camile Abily, who connected to score the 3-0 against the US.

Although this was not the result the USWNT was expected, the players saw this as a great experience to continue to learn from each other and grow as a team. “The turnout has been wonderful,” said Becky Sauerbrunn, U.S defender. “We got to play new players in a different formation. It’s a down year (no Olympics or World Cup), we’re prepping for 2019, so we’re experimenting. It didn’t go our way tonight, but you learn from your mistakes and just grow.”

Yes, their focus is on the 2019 World Cup, but if they want to have a strong team, they need to start now, better yet in the next couple of friendly games against Russia, coming up in April.
