Sky Blue FC Ties Washington Spirit 3-3 in Road Game
BOYDS, Md — Sky Blue FC and the Washington Spirit finished with a 3-3 draw Wednesday at the Maryland SoccerPlex with the Spirit netting a stoppage time penalty kick to equalize.
Rain preceding the game created a slick surface at the Soccerplex. The first half consisted of several missed scoring opportunities for both clubs and was fairly even except for the 39th minute Spirit goal by Robyn Gayle (assisted by Crystal Dunn) after breaking through two Sky Blue defenders to beat Sky Blue keeper Jill Loyden on the left post side (However, Loyden recorded four saves during the match).
Still searching for their second win of the year, Sky Blue came out of the locker room flying in the second half. Jonelle Filigno scored two minutes into the second half to tie up the game, tallying her first goal of the season (Filigno did not play at all in the first half, coming in at halftime).
A total of five goals were scored in the second half.
Sky Blue then took the lead in 52nd minute: Dunn committed a foul just outside the 18 yard box; Katy Freels sent the free kick toward the back post and it went through traffic untouched to beat Harris.
A counterattack gave Sky Blue its last goal in the 65th minute resulting in a deflection goal off Kelley O’Hara for her first National Women’s Soccer League career goal.
Washington continued pressing Sky Blue and scored again in the 74th minute, with a goal by midfielder Lori Lindsey. The final goal of the game — Spirit’s equalizer — took place in the second minute of added time when a handball was called on Sky Blue inside the 18 yard box awarding the Spirit a penalty kick which Spirit midfielder Diana Matheson successfully placed into the net. The score remained 3-3 until the end of the game.
Washington outshot New Jersey 16-15, and Sky Blue recorded 10 shots on goal while the Spirit recorded 7.
Sky Blue’s next match is on Saturday, May 24 on the road against the Portland Thorns FC. In their first meeting this season, the two clubs battled to a 1-1 draw at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J. on April 19.
