Setting the Pre-Game Scene in Akron: Thunder vs. Rubberducks 4/15

by Matt Kardos | Posted on Tuesday, April 15th, 2014

The Thunder improved to 6-5 on the season after shutting out the Rubberducks 2-0 at Canal Park last night. Bryan Mitchell earned his first victory of the season by fanning 12 over six dominant innings for Trenton. A two-run single by Tyler Austin in the first inning proved to be all the run-support Mitchell would need. The Game last night saw heavy rain from the fourth inning until its conclusion; today there has been a steady flurry of snow in Akron which is expected to continue into the evening hours which could cause for a slippery track in the outfield.

After giving second baseman Rob Refsnyder and catcher Gary Sanchez the night off last night, Manager Tony Franklin said that he would give a few of his regulars the night off today. Franklin has decided to give a breather to centerfielder Mason Williams and third baseman Rob Segedin in the middle game of this three game set in Akron.

Jeremey Bleich will toe the rubber for the Thunder tonight coming off his first victory of the season last week in Erie. The 26-year old Bleich is now fully recovered from his 2010 shoulder surgery which caused him to miss all of the 2011 season and limited his innings over the last two seasons. In his first two starts of 2014, Bleich has gone 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA with 12 strikeouts in nine innings of work.

Opposing Bleich for Akron will be 23-year old right hander, Cody Anderson who enters action with 1-1 record and a 3.75 ERA. Anderson was the Cleveland Indians Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2013 and is looking to rebound from his first defeat of the year when he gave up four earned runs in six innings of work against Bowie last week.

This afternoon, the Yankees recalled catcher JR Murphy and infielder Scott Sizemore from Triple-A Scranton. In conjunction, the Thunder have sent Francisco Arcia to Scranton and have added catcher Tyson Blaser to the roster in his place.
