Rutgers Softball and Baseball Both Earn Midweek Wins
The Rutgers baseball and softball teams both secured midseason wins helping advance their season records and allowing them to gain momentum going into their next games.
The men held onto their lead at home, securing a 7-5 victory over Iona despite Iona’s rally in the 9th inning where they scored five runs.
Redshirt freshman Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) (2-2) got in his first career start for the Scarlet Knights and was able to keep the first five innings scoreless, which gave Rutgers the chance they needed to get the early lead.
The win against Iona brings the baseball team’s overall record to 10-13.
The men travel to New Rochelle, N.Y. on April 2 to play Iona once again and complete their home-and-home midweek series. They then travel down to Texas for the weekend to play Houston starting on Friday, April 4.
The Rutgers women’s softball team also came home with a victory after traveling the short distance to Seton Hall. The Scarlet Knights were all tied up at five apiece against their in-state rival until the final inning when the Knights kicked their game into high gear, securing seven runs and five hits to beat the Hall 12-5.
After a three-game losing streak, the win allowed the lady knights to breathe a sigh of relief and get back into the rhythm, that they had before they faced the small midseason rut.
With 12 runs in the game the softball team not only got the W but also, recorded its highest run total of the season.
The softball team travels to Villanova on Thursday, April 3 where they will take on the Wildcats at 2:30p.m.
The win against Seaton Hall brings their overall record to 12-10.
Both the baseball and softball teams are getting into conference play which will later determine their potential place in tournament play.
