CHARLOTTESVILLE, V.A. – Rutgers surprised Virginia over the weekend by beating them 2-1 in a very close game. Freshman forward Miles Hackett (Montclair, NJ) made his Rutgers debut and scored both goals. The game remained tied until the 65th minute when Hackett scored off of a short tap from a rebound, which was the game-winning shot.

“It was great to get this exhibition win against a team that was all over the field and one that will certainly have another outstanding year,” said head coach Dan Donigan. “We managed to get a look at a lot guys tonight, especially the ones we brought in to fill certain roles on the field. Our goal is to get better each and every day as a team. We will learn and grow from this exhibition win as we head into our next game.”

Cavaliers scored first in the 11th minute. Rutgers turned the ball over right in front of the defense and Riggs Lennon scored over David Greczek for the goal.

Rutgers then scored off of a set piece at the 23rd minute mark to tie the game up. JP Correa kicked the set piece with a perfect pass from Miles Hackett, who put it into the right corner of the net.

Then, in the 65th minute, Hackett delivered the blow by scoring a second goal off of a Caldwell rebound.

Hackett finished with a game-high of four shots, including three shots on target. Rutgers concluded the game outshooting the Cavaliers, 5-3.

Both sophomores David Greczek (Fairfield, NJ) and Mitch Wailier (Holmdel, NJ) saw time in goal for the Scarlet Knights. Greczek, who made 108 saves last season, made Rutgers’ only save in the first 45 minutes. Wailer played the entire second half, however did not register a save as the Rutgers defense kept Virginia without a shot in the final 45 minutes of play.

RU will host NJIT in it’s final preseason game on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Yurcak Field at 7 p.m. The Scarlet Knights will kick off the season Friday Aug. 29 against UMKC at Yurcak Field at 8 p.m.
