Rutgers, Ohio State, Penn State Win In Season Openers
There really is no better feeling than college football being back. Rutgers was one of the first teams in the Big Ten to play, and they came out with a win over the Washington State Cougars with a final score of 41-38.
Rutgers had a bunch of new players on the field for this game. WR Janarion Grant celebrated his first career start with four receptions and a total of 48 yards. Many other players made their collegiate debuts such as Mike Bimonte, Andre Hunt, Andrew Turzilli and many more.
This was a very important game for Rutgers because it was their debut in the Big Ten. Rutgers defeated a school in the PAC-12 for the first time in school history. They rushed the ball 43 times, and had 215 yards on the ground.
So far, they are showing improvements from last season. Penn State also had their first victory of the season over the University of Central Florida Knights, with a final score of 28-26. Justin Holman found Josh Reese in the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown pass early in the quarter.
With under two minutes to play, Reese made an incredible catch to put UCF in the red zone. This game did not go as smoothly as Penn State would have liked, considering they were on the 20, down by one with nine seconds left in the fourth quarter. Christian Hackenberg finished with 457 yards passing with a touchdown, but his performance also included two interceptions. The Nittany Lions rushed for only 57 yards, averaging 2.0 yards per carry. The Nittany Lions are on a mission to get back to the top of the Big Ten.
Ohio State had quite the performance as well, with their win over the Navy Midshipmen with a final score of 34-17. Freshman J.T. Barrett threw for 226 yards, and threw two touchdowns. This was his college debut. He earned his starting position after senior Braxton Miller injured his right shoulder a few weeks ago. Barrett became the second freshman since 1950 to start a season opener at quarterback for Ohio State. Barrett ran nine times for 50 yards. He did not throw often so the game was mostly on the ground. The Buckeyes launched a 10-play drive that only included one pass.
