Patriots Set Franchise Record for First Half Wins
This past week, the Somerset Patriots made history. In a makeup game from the first half of the season against the Lancaster Brainstormers, the Patriots won 7-0, and set a team record for the most wins in the first half of the season with a total of 47 wins. The previous record of 46 wins was set last season.
Patriots manager Brett Jodie stated, “I think we’ve been doing pretty well. I don’t think we’ve been clicking on all cylinders yet, but I think we’ve done a pretty good job and we’ve won a lot of ballgames,” on the success they have had so far this season.
The Patriots, with their historic amount of wins, clinched the first half Atlantic League Liberty Division, meaning that they have secured a spot in the Atlantic League playoffs come September. On preparing for the playoffs, Coach Jodie said, “The biggest thing is staying healthy. A lot of teams who win the first half division aren’t healthy sometimes come playoff time, so we have to stay healthy for September. Also, we have to make sure we’re playing our best baseball as a team come playoff time, as well.”
The Patriots have earned success throughout the first half of their season through the great play of their offense and pitching staff. One key player that has helped produce the most offense for the Patriots this season is third baseman Corey Smith. Smith, on the success he has had this season said, “I’ve just been doing what I’ve always been capable of doing. I’ve been doing a good job of getting guys in who are in scoring position and just put up quality at bats every time I step up to the plate.”
Smith leads the Patriots in RBIs, home runs and batting average and was an All-Star for the Patriots, as well. “Just stay consistent. Come out every day and have good at bats and put the team in position to win games,” Smith added in regards to continuing his performance.
Pitching wise, the Patriots have gotten good performances from their starters to their bullpen. This includes starting pitcher Matt Zielinski, who was an All-Star for the Patriots this year, and closer John Hunton, who leads the league with 32 saves.
Currently, the Patriots are 12-10 in the second half of the season and are also in first place in the Freedom Division.
“We’re a good team. All the guys on our team love the game of baseball, and with that, bring the excitement that you need every day to win a baseball game,” shortstop Scott Kelly said.
