Monday Night Raw Review

by Canadace Kidd | Posted on Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

August 11th’s Monday Night Raw was themed to celebrate Hulk Hogan’s birthday, and it was definitely filled with fireworks. Hulk Hogan received birthday wishes from NFL player Drew Brees, comedian Weird Al Yankovic and others throughout the night.

The opening segment on Raw featured Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman. Heyman cut a passionate promo about John Cena, on behalf of his client, Brock Lesnar. Heyman stated that Lesnar will once again dominate Cena, as he has with his past opponents.

Match #1: Roman Reigns vs. Ryback. Roman Reigns delivered as usual in this match. Curtis Axel, Ryback’s tag team partner interfered throughout the duration of the match. The interference caused the match to end in a disqualification. Roman Reigns was interviewed by Renee Young after his match and was asked if he was ready to face Randy Orton at Summerslam. Roman Reigns stated that he is “taking everything from Orton this Sunday and will come out victorious.”

Match #2: RVD vs. Seth Rollins. Always an athletic, high flying match with these two. The chemistry is great.  Seth won the bout. After the match, Rollins was suspiciously eyeing Hogan’s presents at the top of the stage, and as Rollins turned to walk away, Dean Ambrose popped out of a present and attacked him. Dean cut a promo on Rollins saying that Summerslam will be a nightmare for him because he will never stop fighting.

Segment: As the feud with Stephanie McMahon and Brie Bella continues to heat up, Stephanie pulls out the last arsenal in her pocket. She brings out a woman named Megan who is Daniel Bryan’s physical therapist. Megan sadly confesses that she has been having an affair with Daniel Bryan, who is married to Brie Bella. This upsets Brie Bella and she comes out to confront Stephanie McMahon and the physical therapist. Brie attacks Stephanie. Stephanie says that they won’t wait for Summerslam to compete and that they will have a match on Raw.

Match # 3: Jack Swagger vs. Antonio Ceasaro. Ceasaro did a great job as the heel in the match to work on Swagger’s injured ribs. Swagger fought back with eagerness and ultimately picked up the victory. After the match Rusev came out and Jack swagger stood off with Rusev. Both competitors’ proudly holding up their countries flags, anxiously awaiting their match at Summerslam.

Segment:  A one on one conversation with Chris Jericho and Bray Wyatt. This intense conversation featured Bray Wyatt doing most of the talking. Chris Jericho intently listened while Bray accusing Jericho of trying to live up to his father’s expectations and compensating for falling short by becoming as savior for himself. Jericho declared that there are many sides to him and that Bray won’t know which side will show up for their match, but he promises to leave Bray Wyatt speechless. Bray laughs and the interview ends with both wrestlers staring each other down.

Match #4: AJ Lee vs Eva Marie. Early on in the match AJ’s Summerslam opponent Paige came out to the ring and skipped around the ring to distract AJ. It turned out that this plan worked because AJ lost focus and Eva pinned her for the win. Frustrated, AJ Lee attacked Eva Marie, at ringside after the match.

Segment: John Cena comes out to the ring to address the remarks made earlier by Paul Heyman. Cena makes it clear that he will not lay down for Brock at Summerslam. Cena feels that Brock does not deserve the title. He believes that Brock is a bully, he’s selfish and basically not a team player for the company. John Cena challenges Brock Lesnar to come out to face him. Brock doesn’t come out and Cena declares victory for Sunday’s match up.

Segment: Brie Bella was arrested for assaulting her husband’s physical therapist earlier in the night.

Match # 5: Dolph Ziggler vs Heath Slater w/ the Miz at ring side. Miz stands on the commentator’s table and taunts Ziggler by his presence. Heath slater takes the victory, thanks to Miz being a distraction.

Match #6: Randy Orton vs Sheamus. The hard hitting match was enjoyable to watch. Randy was definitely taking it to Sheamus, to prove a point to his Summerslam opponent Roman Reigns. Randy gives his signature RKO as Sheamus jumps off the ropes and this result in Orton getting the victory.

Segment: Hulk Hogan’s birthday celebration. Hogan comes out to see the current WWE superstars applauding at ring side. Longtime friend and manager Jimmy Hart and legendary interviewer “Mean”Gene Orkerland are in the ring to welcome Hulk Hogan. Hulk gives a heartfelt speech when legendary wrestlers, Ric flair, “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff, “Rowdy ‘Roddy Piper, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall come to the ring to honor Hulk. During the serenading, Brock Lesnar came out to interrupt. John Cena comes to the rescue, and Brock leaves the ring with a cocky smile on his face.

Overall, I feel that this week’s Monday Night Raw did a great job of pumping up the fans for this Sunday’s Summerslam PPV. I would rate this episode an 8 out of 10.
