Local NY/NJ Guide To The 2014 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament
With so many teams in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament you might think it’s too hard to follow the local teams and players that will be competing. Not so fast! Yesterday we provided you with our guide for the men’s tournament, and today we get you caught up on who’s participating in the women’s tourney.

Let’s start with the teams…
Albany Great Danes
The Albany Great Danes topped Stony Brook for their third straight America East title, earning their third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Led by fourth year head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson, Albany finished the season 28-4 overall and 15-1 in America East Conference play. The Great Danes are ranked #4 in the National Mid-Major Poll, matching their highest ranking ever. They are looking for their first ever Division 1 NCAA Tournament win and enter as a No. 15 seed and will battle No. 2 seed West Virginia.
Sophomore forward Shereesha Richards leads the team, averaging 20.3 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. She shoots 63% from the field. Junior center Megan Craig contributes 12.5 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 59% from the field. She has blocked 49 shots this season.
Army Black Knights
The Army Black Knights will make their second NCAA appearance as a Division 1 program after winning the Patriot League Championship. Head coach Dave Magarity is in his eight season leading the Black Knights. Army finished the season 25-7 overall and 14-4 in Patriot League play. They will enter the tournament as a No. 13 seed and play No. 4 seed Maryland.
The Black Knights are led by 2014 Patriot League Player of the Year, Kelsey Minato. The sophomore guard averages 21.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in 37 minutes per game. Minato is dangerous all over the floor, shooting 44% including 43% from behind the three-point line. She is money from the charity strip, shooting an impressive 93% from the free throw line.
All-Patriot League Second Team selection Jen Hazlett is also a major contributor. The senior plays both the guard and forward position and averages 13.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists.
In her third season as head coach, Stephanie Gaitley led the Rams to their first ever Atlantic 10 title after winning the conference championship as the No. 3 seed. The Rams will now make their second NCAA appearance, but first in 20 years. Fordham went 25-7 overall this season, including a 11-5 mark in the Atlantic 10.
The Rams have a couple big time players. Erin Rooney was named to the First-Team All-Atlantic 10 following a season that saw her average 17.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists, all team highs. She also recorded 43 steals and plays an average of 36.9 minutes per contest. Rooney became the first Ram in program history to register 500 points, 200 rebounds, and 150 assists in a single season.
Abigail Corning was second on the team in points (12.6), rebounds (6.7), and assists (4.4). The Second-Team All-Atlantic 10 selection averages 37.4 minutes per game.
Fordham was given a No. 10 seed and will play No. 7 seed California in the first round.
Marist Red Foxes
The Marist Red Foxes have built a dynasty under New York State Basketball Hall of Fame head coach Brian Giorgis. The team captured their ninth consecutive MAAC Championship. They will be making their ninth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and tenth ever. The program has won four first round games in their tournament history.
The Poughkeepsie, N.Y. school went 27-6 overall this season, including 18-2 in conference play. They enter the Big Dance as a No. 11 seed and will battle No. 6 seed Iowa.
Five players average double-digit points; Emma O’Connor, Madeline Blais, Leanne Ockenden, Sydney Coffey, and Casey Dulin. O’Connor leads the team at 13.6 points per game to go along with 6.8 rebounds. She shoots 56% from the field and 44% from three-point range.
St. John’s Red Storm
Head coach Joe Tartamella is in his second season leading St. John’s and led the team to it’s fifth straight NCAA appearance after finishing the season second in the Big East and falling in the Big East Conference Tournament Championship to top-seed DePaul. St. John’s finished the season at 22-10, including 13-5 in Big East play.
This is the Red Storm’s ninth all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the program has a record of 6-8 record in those games.
Newark, NJ native, Aliyyah Handford was an All-Big East First Team selection after averaging 16.2 points and 5.3 rebounds. She also recorded 63 steals. Danaejah Grant contributes 11.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game and freshman Amber Thompson is the teams best rebounder at nine per game.
St. John’s enters as a No. 8 seed and will play No. 9 seed Southern California.
After going 22-9 overall and finishing fifth in the ACC with a 10-6 conference record, Syracuse received a N0. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They will face No. 11 seed Chattanooga in the first round. The sixth seed matches the highest seed in school history. The Orange will be making their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance, the third under eighth year head coach Quentin Hillsman.
The Orange currently have a No. 25 RPI ranking.
Brittney Sykes was named to the All-ACC Second Team after averaging 16.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.8 assists to lead the team. She shot 51% from the field and 33% from three-point range. Her 519 points this season were the fifth highest single-season total in program history.
Brianna Butler led the ACC in three points with 97, shooting 35% from long range. She averages 14.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. Shakeya Leary is the teams top rebounder at 7.4 per game while also contributing 8.0 points.
Those six NY/NJ teams received a bid to dance. All of them have the talent to win at least one game. Many other teams across the country have players from the area on their roster and contributing, let’s take a look…
Imani Tate – Freshman – G – Bronx, NY
Appeared in 31 games, averaging 4.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.0 assists.
Zakiya Saunders – Freshman – G – Fort Drum, NY
Appeared in 16 games, started one. Averaged 1.3 points while recording 13 rebounds and nine assists on the year.
Bridget Ryan – Sophomore – G/F – Scotch Plains, NJ
Appeared in nine games for an average of 2.9 minutes. Averages one point per game and recorded seven rebounds and one assist.
Allie Setter – Sophomore – F – Ballston Lake, NY
Appeared in 19 games for an average of 3.9 minutes. Scored 18 points and dished out three assists, while averaging 1.2 rebounds.
Cassie Broadhead – Freshman – G – Glenville, NY
Did not play this season.
Saniya Chong – Freshman – G – Ossining, NY
Started four games, appeared in 33. Averaged 19.2 minutes, 5.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.
Stefanie Dolson – Senior – C – Port Jervis, NY
Started all 34 games while leading team in minutes with 31.9. Also led the team with 9.2 rebounds per game. Averaging 12.4 points and 3.3 assists.
Bria Hartley – Senior – G – North Babylon, NY
Started all 34 games. Second on team in points at 16.4 per game. Averages 3.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists.
Breanna Stewart – Sophomore – F – Syracuse, NY
American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and espnW National Player of the Year averaged 19.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists while starting all 34 games.
Brandi Harvey-Carr – Freshman – F – Camden, NJ
Started three games, appeared in 33. Averaging 3.3 points and 2.2 rebounds in 9.3 minutes.
Haley Peters – Senior – G/F – Red Bank, NJ – The Peddie School
Started all 29 games she appeared in, averaging 31.0 minutes. Led team with 7.7 rebounds while contributing 11.2 points and 1.6 assists.
Shakena Richardson – Junior – G – Neptune, NJ – Rutgers
Sat out this season after transferring from Rutgers.
Emily Tapio – Junior – F – Brewster, NY
Started all 32 games, averaging 27.8 minutes. Averages 9.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.
Mary Nwachukwu – F – Dighton, Mass. – St. John’s
Former transfer from St. John’s has appeared in 32 games and is averaging 12.3 minutes, 3.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.5 assists.
Danielle Padovano – Freshman – F – Dayton, NJ – South Brunswick HS, NJ
Appeared in 27 games, averaging 11 minutes, 1.9 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 0.4 assists.
Samantha Clark – Sophomore – F – Neptune, NJ
Started all 32 games, averaging 27.0 minutes, 8.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists.
Hannah Missry – Freshman – G – Jackson, NJ
Started all 32 games, averaging 29.3 minutes, 9.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 0.7 assists.
Liz Milner – Junior – F – Cold Spring, NJ
Did not appear in any games this season.
Sade King – Redshirt Freshman – G – Mount Vernon, NY
Appeared in 14 games for an average of 4.6 minutes. Averaged 1.9 points, 0.5 rebounds and 0.5 assists.

Amani Tatum – Freshman – G – Cambria Heights, NY
Appeared in 18 games for an average of 4.1 minutes. Scored 15 points, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded nine assists.

Sade Gibbons – Freshman – F – Springfield Gardens, NY
Appeared in ten games for an average of 2.8 minutes. Scored three points, grabbed seven rebounds, and handed out two assists.
Rayne Connell – Sophomore – G – Maspeth, NY
