La Salle Defeats St. Bonaventure On Last-Second Shot

La Salle women’s basketball hosted St. Bonaventure Saturday afternoon at the Tom Gola Arena. This game continued conference play and the Explorers, who were desperate for a win, hoped to have a better record than their non-conference. The Bonnies are 6-12 and 1-4 in Atlantic 10 play while the Explorers are 6-11 with a 1-3 record in conference play.

After an intense game, the Explorers pushed past St. Bonaventure 66-63.

Freshman guard Shaquana Edwards hit the game-winning three with 57 seconds left in the game to give LaSalle the lead. They were able to hold onto the lead after St. Bonaventure’s numerous timeouts as well as a missed three from the Bonnies.

The first quarter of the game was a close contest. La Salle was up at the end of the quarter 13-11 as Amy Griffin led the way in scoring. In the second quarter, the Bonnies picked up the momentum to tie the game. The Explorers answered back with eight uncontested shots leaving the score at 29-22 with 1:59 left. St. Bonaventure did not allow that to continue cutting the La Salles lead to four points going into the half. Although, La Salle made a layup to bring it back to six at 31-25.

Early in the third quarter, the Explorers extended their lead to 10 points. They had another four uncontested shots to bring their lead to 14. The Bonnies went on a run to cut La Salle’s lead to four points. At the end of the third, it was a 47-43 game with La Salle still up.

3:59 into the fourth quarter, La Salle trailed the Bonnies 61-52. A pair of Amy Griffin free throws narrowed the lead before Adreanna Miller made a layup to tie the game 61-61.

St. Bonaventure’s Jalisha Terry answered with a layup to bring put them up two which led to Edwards’ game-winning three-point shot from the right corner of the ark. That made the score to 64-63.

Miller helped extend the lead knocking down two foul shots to bring to game to its final score of 66-63. Mariah Ruff’s three-pointer to tie the game fell short. Edwards caught the rebound and held on for the last seconds of the game.

Edwards finished with 17 points and three rebounds. Miller added 15 points while Shalina Miller and Griffin ended with 13 points apiece. Ashanti Freeland helped the team with eight rebounds, with five coming on the offensive end.

The Explorers will be on the road again for their next game against Duquesne on Wednesday night.
