Frank Lampard Officially Signs with NYC FC
Thursday morning, at the a public event in Brooklyn Bridge Park, NYC FC, Major League Soccer’s 20th franchise announced the signing of England National Team legend and former Chelsea captain Frank Lampard.
As of August 1st Lampard will officially become the new squad’s fourth player on a two-year deal, joining Jeb Brovsky, Josh Saunders, as well as Spanish legend and fellow designated player David Villa. Lampard will don the number 8 jersey, the same he has worn throughout his illustrious career in Europe. It is yet to be determined if the player, highly respected for his leadership, will also wear the captain’s armband
Lampard brings a wealth of experience to the still growing squad. During his 20-year career Lampard has played in nearly 600 EPL games, winning the league three times. He has been on four FA Cup winning squads, captained Chelsea’s 2012 Champions League winning season, and captained the English National Team during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
“It is going to be an exhilarating opportunity for us all to create this new fantastic new MLS club, in a league that is growing quickly in popularity and ability,” said an exhilarated Lampard. “Hopefully my experience can help us have an impact in my first season. I love a challenge and being competitive and I know everyone at New York City FC does too. I’m sure we will make the city and our fans proud.” Lampard feels as though the lack development at the youth level is one of the characteristics stalling the growth of the league and feels his presence will assist in the development of the young players.
Lampard will be suiting up under the management of Head Coach Jason Kreis. “I am really looking forward to working with Frank,” said Kreis. “His leadership, maturity, and experience are perfect characteristics for a new club like ours. He is rare talent, one that scores a lot of goals from the midfield, yet a disciplined player and someone who reads the game brilliantly. A gift for a coach.”
This is not the first time Lampard had been recruited by the MLS. In past years Lampard had been rumored to be courted by the Los Angeles Galaxy, the squad of friend and former national team teammate David Beckham. The former Chelsea man said during this go-around the offer to join the MLS felt like the right time and the right decision. Lampard said he was sold on the team after hearing how they are determined to the big picture, adding, “they are making the right decisions for the long term regarding how they recruit and how they build team spirit.”
Lampard joins David Villa as the club’s second Designated Player signing, stating that playing with Villa “will be a joy,” adding “David is the right type of player you want to play with as a midfielder, he has great movement and is a player with great character, a great team player.”
The squad is ecstatic to have Lampard aboard, but with just four players on the roster, it is nowhere near done building. Other international superstars have been rumored to join the squad, including Spanish icon and Barcelona captain Xavi Herandez. When asked if signing Xavi is a budding possibility head coach Kries said that he is no potion to discuss further signings, but with just four players signed, stated the obvious by saying that there will be plenty more players joining the club.
Coming on the heels of an exhilarating World Cup it is a mighty exciting time to be a soccer fan in New York City.
