New York Giants’ superstar quarterback Eli Manning is often known for showing a lack of emotion on the field, but that was not the case when he was questioned Thursday about the recent lawsuit filed against him involving accusations of misleading memorabilia collectors.
A visibly upset Manning answered the media claiming, “I’ve never done what I’ve been accused of doing. I have no reason, nor have I ever had any reason, to do anything of that nature,” he said.
In January of 2014, memorabilia collector Eric Inselberg filed a civil suit against Manning claiming that the quarterback falsified game-used equipment. Then, last week the New York Post revealed they had further evidence to prove these allegations when they discovered incriminating emails.
According to the New York Post, the emails, dating back to 2010 and addressed to Giants’ equipment manager Joe Skiba read, “2 helmets that can pass as game used. That is it. Eli.”
Manning has claimed that these emails were taken out of context and that everything will be cleared up soon. “I’ve done nothing wrong, and I have nothing to hide. And I know that when this is all done, everybody will see it the same way,” he continued Thursday. As part of a deal with Steiner Sports, Manning is under contractual obligations to produce authentic merchandise.
Manning also noted in the interview that he was upset by the way the public is questioning his integrity and reputation. Since arriving in New York in 2004, Manning has been an upstanding citizen and a dedicated civil servant, even winning the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for his dedication to pediatric cancer care and research.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie commented on the situation saying that Manning is a “liar” who “got caught.” Manning declined to comment on the governor’s statement. Christie is a dedicated fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
“When someone starts something up and everybody turns against you very quickly, it hurts a little bit,” said Manning. He noted that he has not heard anything from Rodger Goodell or the league regarding these pending allegations.
