On Wednesday afternoon in Secaucus, New Jersey, the most prestigious baseball card company, Topps, held a launch party for their first set of 2017 cards. The venue could not have been more appropriate – Studio 42 inside the MLB Network offices.
Known particularly for it’s stadium feel, Studio 42 was named after famous Brooklyn Dodger Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947. The studio has a mound, an infield, an outfield and even bleachers.
Commonly used for on-air instructional video, the Studio had a different purpose on Wednesday – to display the incredible and always evolving Topps baseball cards.
Around the infield were four tables in which party attenders could walk around and look at all types of different cards. From uncut sheets to stellar throwbacks, Topps once again amazed just about everyone.
2016 NL MVP Kris Bryant, who is the face of the 2017 Topps Series 1, was voted as the number one card for the 2017 season. The reigning MVP and World Series champion was thrilled to be the man on the box.
“I love ’em. I love anything,” Bryant said of the card set. “All of the baseball cards I usually get to sign are pretty cool. I don’t know how they are able to come up with some of this work but it’s pretty special. It captures the moment really — not just the action shots but some of the more peculiar faces we make playing. It’s always an adventure when I’m opening up these boxes and signing these cards because it’s a new card every time and I’m excited to sign them.”
Topps is certainly evolving every day and the launch party was just another way of showing it.
For Bryant, spending time with fans is part of his daily routine and becoming the face if Topps only increases his popularity amongst them.
“It’s not too demanding for me. I’m kind of used to it. I try to take time for the fans before each game and sign autographs. Winning the World Series and having the year that we did, it comes with the territory and I wouldn’t have it any other way, honestly.”
As Topps continues to evolve, faces like Bryant’s are certainly important to all fans, young and old alike.
