Chris Johnson leaves Jets With No Deal
Well, Chris Johnson went to Florham Park, and left without a deal. According to a report by Kristen Dyer of Metro, the New York Jets did make a multi-year offer to the free agent running back. Dyer said a source informed him the deal was around $3.5- 4 million a year.
The Jets also let Johnson know that he would be a part of a backfield that will be sharing carries. Also, Dyer reported that even though Johnson left without a deal they are still confident he might sign with the team. Johnson was at the Barclay Center watching the Knicks and Nets face off, and was asked by some reporters how the meeting with the Jets went. Johnson responded, “Everything went well, I’m just taking it one day at a time, taking my time, and whatever decision I make, it will be the best decision.”
Johnson will probably shop the Jets offer to see if he can get more money from another team. It’s been reported that he may be looking for a 2-year deal worth $10 million, but with the running back market steadily declining, it may be unlikely he gets anything more then $4 million a year.
Jets GM John Idzik is sticking to his reputation; that he simply won’t over pay for a player. If Johnson does decide to sign with a team other then the Jets, I don’t believe it will be that much of a loss. The Jets have running backs on the roster like Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell that can get the job done. Chris Johnson would be more of a luxury, than a necessity.
Some of the other reported teams that have shown interest in CJ are the Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants.
