BlueClaws Blow Lead and Lose in Extras

It was another late inning disaster that cost the Lakewood BlueClaws a possible victory.  The BlueClaws would lose 5-3 to the Delmarva Shorebirds in 12 innings after blowing a 3-0 lead.

Early on, it the BlueClaws looked great after their off day on Wednesday. In the first inning, the BlueClaws scored two runs. One on a solo home run by second baseman Andrew Pullin and then a RBI single by  DH Willians Astudillo.  Pullins would  come up big again for the BlueClaws in the second inning with a RBI single to give Lakewood a 3-0 lead.  Pullen said on his great performance at the plate “It was good. I mean I was doing whatever I could to help the team win. It felt great getting a home run tonight as well but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get the win.”  Pullin overall went 3 for 6 on the night and his home run was his eighth of the season. Unfortunately for the BlueClaws after Pullin’s RBI single, they wouldn’t score again for the rest of the game.

With a 3-0 lead, BlueClaws starting pitcher Jon Prosinski pitched great to keep Lakewood in the lead. Prosinski pitched six solid innings giving up only two runs on three hits and struck out two. Prosinski on his start said “I felt I had great command of my fast ball tonight. and  that allowed me to get a lot of ground ball outs.  Overall I felt I had a good outing out there.”  Talk about ground ball outs, 12 of the 18 outs Prosinski had in the game were ground outs.  Another thing that helped Prosinski have a good start is the fact that he has pitched against Delmarva a lot this season. Prosinski said “I think I’ve pitched against Delmarva five times this season. I have a pretty good understanding of their hitters and what they want to do.”  Prosinski left the game with a 3-2 lead but unfortunately for him and the BlueClaws the bullpen couldn’t keep that lead intact.

In the eighth inning, Delmarva would get a RBI  single off BlueClaws relief pitcher Delvi Francisco to tie the game at 3-3 and eventually send the game into extra innings.

In extra innings, BlueClaws relief pitcher Aaron Baker did all he could to keep Lakewood tied with Delmarva. Baker looked great in his first two innings of work for the BlueClaws, which included striking out five straight batters. Baker, though, unfortunately ran out of gas in his third inning of work in the 12th inning, where he would give up two runs giving Delmarva a 5-3 lead and ultimately the victory.

On the loss, Prosinski said “Every day, you know, the goal is t get the win. So losing this one  which went 12 innings is a tough one to swallow.”

With the loss, the BlueClaws drop to 18-28 in the second half of the season and are now on a two game losing streak. The BlueClaws will play the rest of the four games in this five game series with Delmarva over the weekend which includes a double header Friday.

Game Notes: BlueClaws DH Willians Astudillo RBI single in the first inning was his 52nd RBI of the season and is now tied with RF Dylan Cozens for the most RBI’s on the team. BlueClaws relief pitcher Joey DeNato picked off a runner in the eighth inning and now has picked off four runners in his last five appearances.

Hi my name is Steven Bassin and I am happy to have an internship at Double G Sports this summer. I am currently going into my junior year at Fairleigh Dickinson University where I am majoring in Communications with a minor in Multimedia Journalism. I have been involved with sports my whole life. I am currently a college football player at Fairleigh Dickinson University, but also participated in baseball and wrestling in high school as well. I am big New York football Giants and New York Yankees, but I am most importantly a sports fan who follows every team or player for NFL,MLB,NBA, and Minor League Baseball. If you need any facts or information about a team or player in those sports I am the guy to ask. I can tell you where a player is from, to where he went to college, to even his strength & weaknesses on the field. I am really looking forward to being a part of Double G Sports this summer and can't wait to start writing about sports.
