Banuelos Promoted to Trenton

by Matt Kardos | Posted on Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

The New York Yankees announced on Tuesday evening that pitcher Manny Banuelos was being promoted to Double-A Trenton from High-A Tampa. Banuelos was once among the premiere prospects in all of baseball; rated by Baseball America as high as the number 29 prospect in all of baseball and the second best in the Yankees system before he was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery in October of 2012. After missing all of the 2013 campaign, the southpaw is blazing the comeback trail in hopes of fulfilling the promise that once surrounded him just a few short years ago.

Banuelos opened this season in Tampa on a strict innings limit and pitched very well over his first five starts. In 12.2 innings, Banuelos had allowed just four earned runs on ten hits while striking out 14. It was announced only an hour before first pitch on Tuesday that Banuelos would be transferred to Trenton and would make his first start for them in New Hampshire that night.

The polished 23-year old had already reached the Triple-A level in 2011/2012 before surgery derailed his development. It is conceivable that Banuelos, a member of the Yankees 40-man roster, could find himself in the big leagues before the season draws to an end. Banuelos has made 23 career starts and was an Eastern League All-Star for Trenton spanning the 2010 and 2011 seasons when he pitched to a 4-6 record with a 3.55 ERA.

Banuelos threw 40 pitches in his first start of the season for the Thunder last night and looked strong in three innings of work against New Hampshire.; striking out four, including the side in the first inning, and allowing just two singles to pace the Thunder to a 4-2 victory. To make room for Banuelos on the roster, the Thunder transferred reliever Jairo Heredia to the Short Season-A Staten Island roster.
