Athlete’s Voices: Amy Zimmer, Episode 2. St. John’s Volleyball

The last weekend of April, we closed our spring season at the University of Delaware. We finished strong by beating Rutgers, Princeton, and Towson! By ending the season competing well with high-level teams shows much promise for next season, especially as we are returning all of our starters and gaining incoming talented players. St. John’s will be a team to watch out for!

As May blew in, so did our finals. After our team finished the fall semester with the highest G.P.A. in St. John’s Athletics, standards were set high for the spring.  Although most of our time was spent cramming for finals, (or recovering from dental work), we always made sure to find time for open practices and lift sessions!

Finally, it is now that time of year and summer is here! I decided to take advantage of the extra free time and attend events happening in the city.  New York has so much to offer! I have attended the “Today Show” and “America’s Got Talent” a couple times and made new connections to help with my career in broadcasting. Also, the NFL Draft takes place at Radio City every year and I was fortunate enough to attend on May 10th.  Although it was the last rounds, I took the advantage to network and meet new people. I had an unbelievable experience. It truly shows that life is what you make of it and you have to go after opportunities, not wait for them to come to you.

It is overwhelming to know I am halfway through my college volleyball career and education. As everyone goes their own way for the summer, I’ll be staying right here in Queens, New York. This will be my first full summer away from home (not to mention my first birthday without my family)! But it’s all about growing up and making sacrifices to do something you love. I’ve given up my summer at home to chase my dreams as I begin my first job at Radio Disney as a Talent Host and to focus hard on my volleyball training!
