76ers beat Hawks for first home win of season

The Philadelphia 76ers (4-4) delivered for their fans by finally winning a game in front of the home crowd at the Wells Fargo Center, beating the Atlanta Hawks (1-7) 119-107. Coming into the game, the Sixers were on a two-game win streak after beating the Houston Rockets on Monday, one of the top teams in the NBA

The team started of well in the first quarter hitting their first six three-pointers and going up by as many as 17. Turnovers became a problem as the Sixers had eight of them in the second quarter and the Hawks began to fight back and shorten the Sixers’ lead They led 59-57 at halftime. Robert Covington shined in the first half, scoring 16 points.

Once the third quarter began, Atlanta picked their game up going up by seven and making the Sixers fight to get the lead and the game back. There was an injury scare as Covington, after having a dominating first half, headed to the locker room with what ended up being a right knee hyper-flexion. He would return for the beginning of the fourth quarter and finish the game with 22 points, three rebounds and three assists. Heading into the fourth quarter as the score was tied at 93 it looked like it would be a battle between the two teams the rest of the way.

The Sixers looked like they wanted this game as they slowly began to pull away with a lead. They kept the Hawks scoreless until about halfway through the quarter when Kent Bazemore hit a free throw and nearly a minute later, Mike Muscala hit the Hawks’ first field goal. Jerryd Bayless extended the lead with a three-pointer as he finished the game with 14 points off the bench. Joel Embiid played a high 30 minutes and finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

Ben Simmons played a phenomenal game with 19 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists recording his fifth double-double of the season. Simmons sealed the game with a huge dunk that brough the home crowd on its feet. The 76ers look to win their fourth straight game and their second at home against the Indiana Pacers (5-3) on Friday at 7pm.
