The New York Red Bulls can now dust off their empty trophy case and place their new Supporter’s Shield that has now been long overdue.
Needing a win to secure the MLS Supporters’ Shield, and grab the first major trophy in the club’s mostly disappointing 16-year existence, the Red Bulls went down a goal after just six minutes, with former Red Bull Mike Magee delivering the opener
The Red Bulls had no interest in reliving history though, choosing instead to step up with the most impressive performance in club history, rallying with five unanswered goals to blow away the Chicago Fire 5-2, and secure the Supporters’ Shield.
The New York Red Bulls captain responded their early mistake by bagging a stunning goal in the match Sunday in front of a sold out crowd of 25,219 in Harrison, NJ.
The former France striker finished off a counter-attack with a quite breathtaking finish, chesting down a through ball on the edge of the area, and then drilling in the bouncing ball off the underside of the crossbar.
Four minutes into the second half, Ibrahim Sekagya gave New York the lead. Then came Lloyd Sam’s goal. Erik Alexander got behind the defense in the 77th minute, and Jonny Steele piled on six minutes from time, before Quincy Amarikwa consolation. In the span of 45 minutes, a 1-1 game that was set to cost New York the Supporters’ Shield had turned into a rout, the Red Bulls’ victory not only ending the Fire’s season but giving the New York club their first major honor.
The result clinches the top seed throughout the playoffs for New York, who will find out their Eastern Conference Semifinal opponent and where they will travel for the first leg next weekend based on the result of the midweek Knockout Round contest between Houston and Montreal. As Shield winners, the Red Bulls also clinched a berth in the 2014-15 edition of the CONCACAF Champions League.
