Last season, Thunder fans may have noticed a different Kevin Durant than previous seasons; he was more aggressive and agitated, evidenced by 12 technical fouls and a series of questionable gestures to players and fans that did not go unnoticed by the media.
In an interview with the Oklahoman, Durant related the cause of his restlessness to being obsessed with winning.
”Last year, I was obsessed with it,” Durant said. “Like, I wasn’t going to sleep because I wanted to win so bad. I was screaming at my teammates, at the refs, at the coaches. I got mad because I thought ‘if we have a bad game here, we’re not going to win a championship.’”
Understandably, the pressure Durant felt to win and play every game flawlessly affected his performance on the court. After the humbling experience of being beat out by the Memphis Grizzlies in the second round of the playoffs last season, Durant says he will approach this season with a more Zen mentality.
“I mean, of course I want to win it, but I’m not obsessed with it.” continued Durant in his interview, “I’m going to put in the work to help my team, but I’m not going to be obsessed with it because that’s when I compromise myself, and most of the time it doesn’t work out.”
