On Monday the New York Knicks have announced they have exercised the 4th year of Iman’s Shumpert contract keeping him in the Big Apple for two more full seasons.
Shumpert will now be able to hit free agency in the summer of 2015 as an unrestricted free agent. This allows the Knicks to match any offer that any team throws Shumpert’s way. This helps with the Knicks salary cap issues as they try to convince Carmelo Anthony to stay in New York.
Shumpert is expected to be the starting shooting guard come opening night as J.R Smith is serving his five game suspension for testing positive for marijuana. A battle between Shumpert and Smith for the starting spot will continue November 10th once J.R returns.
Although Shumpert has been slightly injury prone to start his career, he has proven to bounce back healthy as he is the Knicks top perimeter defender, while continuing to improve his offensive game. It is a great sign to see some home grown talent be a staple at the Garden for some years to come.
