Houston Game is Big for Rutgers Football
Added by Anthony Rodriguez on October 26, 2013.
Two weeks ago, Rutgers blew their chance to upset the Louisville Cardinals on National Television. That loss all but closed the Scarlet Knights’ hope for a conference title and BCS bowl berth.
For the Knights to take the conference, it would mean that they probably won out and Louisville dropped two of their contests, a scenario that seemed extremely unlikely. Yet just a week after Rutgers was defeated, a different Knights team, the University of Central Florida, did something Rutgers could not. They went into Louisville on National Television and came away with a victory.
The victory was huge for UCF, but also big for the Scarlet Knights. The Scarlet Knights still need some help if they want to have a chance at a BCS berth, but now it seems a lot more realistic than it did two weeks ago.
First and foremost, to win the conference Rutgers needs to win all of its conference games, including the match-up with Houston today and a showdown with the surprisingly good UCF Knights coming in several weeks. If they do this, and Louisville drops another won (still unlikely), the Scarlet Knights will win the conference and obtain the BCS bowl berth.
For the Knights to even have a chance they cannot be worried about what Louisville does. They need to take care of their own business every week. For that to happen, junior quarterback Gary Nova needs to play turnover free football.
I thought Gary Nova had made great strides this season, but during the Louisville game he seemed to revert back to his old ways. Nova has to prove this is not going to be a repainting of his sophomore year and that starts today. He cannot let one bad game turn into several.
The big positive for the Scarlet Knights is their defense. A defense that got shredded by Fresno State and SMU, played extremely well against a Louisville offense that is led by arguably the best quarterback in the country. Look for the defense to continue to build off of their solid performance from two weeks ago.

Ultimately, the Scarlet Knights still have a shot, but they need to win the rest of their conference games. That daunting task begins today against Houston, an opponent that the Scarlet Knights should not take lightly.
Prediction: Homecoming has not been friendly to the Scarlet Knights recently, losing two of their past three games, including last year’s stunning loss to Kent State. Look for the Knights to reverse the trend and pull out a nail biting victory. Rutgers 31 Houston 27.
