It has been a tremendous season for the Montclair State men and women’s soccer team. Because of this, awards were given out to the two players who stood out last week. Freshman goalkeeper Michael Gonzalez, a native of Kenilworth, NJ, earned his second award as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week.
Gonzalez posted two shutouts, the first of his career, in a 1-0-1 week for his team. He was able to stop four shots in Montclair State’s 5-0 win over Rhode Island College. Then, in a double-overtime tie against Rutgers-Camden, Gonzalez stopped seven shots. He continues to lead the New Jersey Athletic Conference in goals against average (0.38) and save percentage (.920). In just eight games this season, he has only allowed two goals and made an impressive 23 saves
Junior forward, Francesca Gibson, a native of Cape May, NJ, received the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. This is Gibson’s second offensive player of the week award of the season.
Gibson had an extraordinary week, helping the Red Hawks remain unbeaten (13-0) after a 5-0 win against Rowan University. This was Montclair State’s first win over Rowan since 2004. The junior scored twice and recorded the ninth multi-goal game of her career.
Gibson is currently ranked eighth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference in points with 14, while she is fifth in goals (7) and third in game-winning tallies (3).
