Montclair State Women’s Basketball is a Team to Watch
Added by Jessica Guerra on October 10, 2013.
A team to watch this upcoming basketball season is the Montclair State women’s basketball team. They were a phenomenal team last year that even put together one of the best seasons in school history. With the Women’s DIII News Preseason Poll being released a few days ago and MSU ranked as number one, they believe that the Red Hawks will be even better this season.
Among this tremendous news, junior Melissa Tobie has been named one of the Top 24 Players to Watch by the organization. This is her second straight season on the list. As the Red Hawks went 29-1, captured the NJAC Championship, and reached the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament, Tobie led the Red Hawks in almost every category last season. She was even ranked in the Top 10 in the NJAC in several stats. Not only was Tobie named the NJAC Player of the Year, but also was First-Team All-Region selection by D3Hoops.com.
Is this all that Tobie was named last season? Not at all. She was named a WBCA Honorable Mention All-American, averaging 14.7 points per game, and led the NJAC in field goal percentage, and assist/turnover ratio. She was ranked third in free-throw percentage and blocks, and finished fifth in steals and seventh in assists.
Montclair State set school records for most victories, as well as the longest winning streak. They even tied the New Jersey State records for women’s collegiate basketball for winning percentage and winning streak.
The Lady Red Hawks begin practice on Tuesday, October 15th and open their highly anticipated season on Friday, November 15th against the University of Scranton in the Gwynedd-Mercy Tip-Off Tournament.
